Many shows in the theatre require a follow spot to draw attention to a particular performer or just to give that special pool of light effect.
A follow spot operator controls one of the Theatre's two follow spots, setting the brightness, the size of the spot of light, the colour and of course where the spot is aimed; all under the direction of the stage manager.
Full training in operating the follow spot is given.
We need people who can donate an evening or part of a weekend - typically a follow spotter is needed from 30 minutes before a show starts until the end of the show.
Follow spot operators need to be at least 16 years of age. The follow spots themselves are located in the roof-space of the theatre so operators do need to have a good head for heights
Follow spotting will give you a good understanding of how theatre operates, whether you are interested in theatre for a future career or just want to be involved in a community activity to gain experience. Many volunteers move on to doing other backstage tasks within the theatre.
If you are interested and want to get involved, or want to talk about opportunities available, please email volunteer (AT) jrtheatrecouk with contact number and email address and we will contact you to arrange an initial meeting at the theatre
