York Light Opera Company was formed in 1953 and we have performed at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre every year since 1957. Our very first show at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre was the Richard Tauber musical Old Chelsea.
We generally perform at least two shows a year; a summer performance at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre and a winter show at York's Theatre Royal. Recent productions have included Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Witches of Eastwick. The company takes great pride in continuing its tradition of bringing brand-new musicals to York audiences as well as breathing new life into old favourites.

Little Shop of Horrors
21 June to 25 June
Down on his luck, Seymour Krelborn spends day in day out slaving in Mr Musnik's Florists, mooning over the glamourous and ditsy assistant Audrey, and dreaming of a way out of downtown Skid Row. Until one day, during a total eclipse of the sun, Seymour stumbles upon a strange and exotic new plant that could change his luck forever.
An overnight success, the newly christened Audrey II offers Seymour a ticket out of Skid Row and perhaps even a chance of a date with the real life Audrey - but this ain't no ordinary shrub!
As Audrey II grows to monstrous proportions and develops unusual tendencies, Seymour gives in to her strange demands. Will Seymour survive Audrey II's plans, and can he grab his chance for a life of fame, fortune and true love?
Featuring music in the 1960's style, think The Ronettes, The Crystals and The Supremes. As featured in the 1986 film, includes Somewhere That's Green and Suddenly Seymour. Little Shop Of Horrors is a mouth-wateringly fun night out for all!

The Likes Of Us
Following on from the success of 42nd Street
23 June to 27 June
The Likes of Us was the first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice, before their success with Joseph. The show is on limited release to amateur companies in celebration of Andrew's 60th birthday.
It is then expected to open professionally in London's West End.
Reminiscent of Oliver! The Likes of Us tells the story of philanthropist Dr Thomas Barnardo. A medical student bound for China to work as a medical missionary, Barnardo discovers the appalling conditions of the poor children of London and decides to stay in England to care for them.
With a host of catchy tunes and excellent lyrics, this is a show which will delight all the family — don't miss it!
